The Springfield Youth Symphony (SYS), established in 1957, is a distinguished honors program within the Springfield Public School System. It provides a unique opportunity for talented young musicians to experience the challenges and rewards of performing in a full orchestral setting.
SYS draws its members from both Springfield Public Schools and surrounding districts, offering advanced musical training and crucial performance experience. This was very important to the first SYS directors as they began rehearsals in the fall of 1957. It was comprised of 59 student musicians: 53 from Springfield, 4 from Buffalo, and 2 from Willard. It grew from there.
SYS has garnered a reputation for excellence, performing at prestigious venues and events around the world. These include the International Youth Orchestra Festival in Banff, Canada; The Midwest Clinic in Chicago; the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference; Carnegie Hall in New York City; and Washington, D.C.
Membership in SYS is highly selective and determined by an audition process. To be eligible, students must also be enrolled in private lessons and actively participating in their school's band or orchestra program, ensuring a commitment to musical growth and development.
